Let’s Get Organized, Day 1 – Sustainable Desks

Happy 2010 everyone!

If you are like me, this is your first day back to work after a nice holiday break.  And if you’re really like me, you started the day with a scream when you realized that the magic office elves did not take care of things in your absence, and the piles of clutter on your desk are still there, only a bit dustier.  Darn those lazy elves!

In honor of the New Year (and the stacks of filing I face) I present you with a week of ideas for stylish, sustainable organizing.

First up, the center point of any attempt to organize – the desk!   Check out these six beautiful finds…

For those looking for a little more storage space, not to mention a cool retro vibe, the line of refurbished brushed steel Tanker desks from Twenty Gauge are a real treat.   Originally designed for use during the 40’s and 50’s, these vintage pieces have been sandblasted and refinished with either clearcoat to show the lovely brushed steel underneath the original paint, or powder coat in any of dozens of fresh new colors.  Pricing varies.

This exquisite urban forested walnut writing desk from Sidecar Furniture would look as at home in a Julius Schulman photograph as it would in the movie “Out of Africa”.   Hand crafted with mortise and tenon joinery, this is the desk I aspire to.  Pricing available on request.

Here’s a desk to snap up quick!  This very cute, hand painted, one of a kind reclaimed desk and chair set is by OrangeElephant.  Using eco-friendly paints and finishes, they take vintage cast-offs and give them new life.  And for the price, how can you go wrong?  $495 the set

And finally, for those who yearn for adventure, even while slaving away at paperwork, comes the Campaign Desk in Revolutionary Red by abodewell.  Constructed of reclaimed walnut and alder, it is given 6 coats of that amazing red, before being hand waxed to a lustrous finish.  It is also available in custom colors, for those with a less “revolutionary” bent.  Price $695

I hope you enjoyed the first installment in our Let’s Get Organized series.  Stay tuned tomorrow as we check out “The Naked Binder”.
