Etsy Find of the Week – Spaceship Pendants and More…

I love how something ordinary can become extraordinary just by changing its context.

Take these crazy cool “Spaceship” pendants by Etsy seller Urbanhardware.  Want to guess what they started life out as?

Give up?

They are actually fairly ordinary footed metal serving plates from India, turned upside down, stacked, and put to an entirely new use.  Love it!

And those aren’t the only found objects Urbanhardware has transformed into great new lighting…

Hot Off the Presses – NewspaperWood by Vij5

Whether you think the traditional newspaper is on its deathbed or not, there are still thousands of editions being printed daily. All that single use newsprint adds up to a tremendous amount of paper to be recycled.  Although many uses have been found for old newspaper, this has to be one of the more attractive…

NewspaperWood was developed by Dutch design label Vij5 as a way to create a wood like construction material out of waste paper.  By rolling the paper up into “logs”, rendering them solid with binders, then slicing through them, a new material with a wood like grain is achieved.

Simple, yet elegant.  Love it!

The resulting material can be used to construct furniture, such as this industrial style cabinet.

Etsy Find(s) of the Week – A Trip to the Ocean

It’s been a very busy week here.  Meetings, showrooms, more meetings, panicked new clients, writing, meetings in showrooms with panicked clients,… you get the idea.  A whirlwind of design work is a wonderful thing, but it can be exhausting!  That is why I don’t feel in the least bit guilty about taking the rest of this afternoon off to go with my son to the beach.  It is summer after all!

Since I can already anticipate the scent of ocean air, and the feel of warm sand between my toes, my brain can think of nothing but the amazing Pacific Ocean whose shore I will be on soon.  So here you are – my ocean themed Etsy finds.  Enjoy, and have a wonderful weekend!

Oh No! There’s a Monster in My Toilet!

Just had to share this adorable “Toilet Monster”…

From Dutch design company Ecoreminders, this cute little guy is actually a PVC free vinyl decal that seeks to remind you of the wasteful water monster lurking in every toilet. Read the rest of this entry »

Etsy Find of the Week – Atelier 688 Rope Light

Love!

Simple, rustic, natural,… quirky.  Yep, everything that appeals to me today is summed up in the Manila Rope Light by Etsy seller Atelier 688.

Somehow, they have managed to keep the rope light from feeling like it’s part of some poorly conceived pirate theme restaurant.  Instead it has the air of something you would find in some cool, old factory space.  And you know how I love that!

Real Wood from Fake Neighborhood

Can you see the 1.7 million square foot building in this picture?

How about if I pan out a little bit?

See it?  Next to the bridge?  No?  Well, see that big neighborhood right in the middle of the shot?  OK, now look underneath it… Read the rest of this entry »

From Toilets to Tile – Fireclay

From not pretty…

to very pretty…

Replacing old, worn-out, water hogging toilets is considered a “green” thing to do.  But have you ever wondered what happens to all those relics of the 5+ gallons a flush era when they are taken out?  Sadly, many wind up in landfills, but the lucky ones wind up as beautiful tile from Fireclay! Summeritis & Quick Tips for a Cooler Home

Dear Readers,

I have a confession.  I have a bad case of summeritis.  You know, that disease caused by warm, summer mornings spent sleeping in a bit later than you meant to.  Afternoons where the only thing busy are the bees humming around the copious flowers in your backyard.  Days where you try to figure out how to look at least semi-professional in a tank top, and all you want to eat is ice cold watermelon for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  A disease characterized by distraction, lethargy and hair gone wild with humidity.  Yeah, THAT summeritis.

So, I apologize for the infrequency of my postings of late.  I’ll see what I can do to catch up once the weather starts to cool again next week.  Meanwhile, here are a few energy efficient tips to cool your house down when the weather warms. Read the rest of this entry »

Etsy Find of the Week – Reclaimed Wood Apothecary Cabinet

Okay. Other than the fact that I totally want to move into that space, I just have to ask – isn’t this apothecary cabinet beautiful?

Made from lumber gleaned from old, oak floor beams by Etsy seller PegandAwl, this cabinet has all sorts of lovely details.

The roughhewn oak has been sanded smooth, but without losing any of its 100 year old plus character. It is finished with non-toxic tung oil and milk paint. I love the ageless quality of this piece. It seems like it could come from just about any era.

Well, except for one charmingly quirky detail… Read the rest of this entry »
